Ken Haught (Hand Knapped Knives) Artist: Ken Haught grew up on a cattle ranch in Arizona. As a kid he had a collection of arrowheads. He visited the Heard Museum and saw a Native American demonstration of flint knapping. There was a Native American elder giving the demonstration, and he bought some things from him deciding at that time he wanted to study with the elder, but sadly he passed away, therefore Ken had no recourse, but to teach himself.

He began to knap by starting with a large rock, using a hammer stone to cleave off pieces about the size of a dinner plate (that is thin). Then he uses a moose billet as a handle to hit the edges of the stone. When it hits the edge. it bites into the stone and shears off pieces, then shaping pieces with a deer antler tine. All of his pieces are domed in the middle like the Native American did theirs. The goal of every good Knapper is for the flakes to terminate in the middle. He has done this type of work for over twenty years and has perfected his knife technique
