Harold Davidson
Artist specializing in Native American sculpture
 Harold Davidson was
born and reared in Mentmore, New Mexico, just west of Gallup. As a child, he
helped his family herding sheep. To pass the long hours, he began sketching and
found that he had a real interest in art, although he had not received much in
the way of formal training.
In 1985, Harold began
learning the art of sculpting from Marvin Toya, a local sculpture of Native
American art. Since that time, Harold has become a true sculpture in his own
right. He works in stone, wood and metal very easily. His favorite medium,
however, is stone.
“When I work with
stone, I usually dream about the piece before I begin it. It talks to me in my
dream. When I get up the next day and begin to work on the piece, I want to
make it the way I dreamt it. But the stone works itself into what it wants to
be. Whatever happens in my life and to my art, it’s all up to God. When people
buy my sculptures, it makes me feel good because I know my stones have found a
home.”
Harold’s work has
recently been accepted by the Heard Museum in Phoenix which is a great
honor for him.
